Mrs. Bhavani Raghuraman, one of the most respected names in the field of academia, has always been a passionate educationist and facilitator. Her long held faith in education's ability to amplify both individual and societal intellect and hence drive world progress, has led her on her journey of 34 years in education, out of which 21 have seen her as the principal of various reputed institutes.
She began her career in the July of 1968 with St. Thomas High School, Pune where she taught multiple subjects to high school students for four years. After a brief hiatus, she resumed work in 1975 and this time, served in the administrative division, until 1979, at the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, Pune (an autonomous research Institute under the Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation).
She realized that to bring about positive, continuous growth and to truly make a difference, it was vital to start at the grass root level and work on channelizing the potential of children. Therefore, the period between 1986 to1989 saw her with Dafodils School, Pune where she handled the Pre-school section and centered her teaching methodology on activity-based learning.
In 1990, Mrs. Raghuraman crossed the first major milestone of her career when she helped set up Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Sulochana Natu Vidya Mandir, Pune (an international educational institution with 84 Schools in India and abroad). As the founding principal, she saw the school grow from 53 students in grade 1 to a school of repute with 30 divisions and 1600 students. Under her 15 years of competent tutelage, the school has had a100 % result every year with 2 to 3 students consistently figuring in the Board's merit list.
In 2006, Mrs. Raghuraman joined a reputed School in Gujarat (affiliated to the CBSE Board) as the school's principal. A fierce advocate for project-based learning, she was responsible for the design & implementation of the school's academic curriculum & planner for Grade I to XI and for designing a project-based Pre-school Curriculum along with Subject Learning Centers. Being a strong proponent of constructive academic evaluation, she designed & successfully implemented CCE (Continuous Comprehensive Evaluation) in the school's assessment culture. Moreover, she also spearheaded the initiative to get the school ISO-9001 certified in November 2009.
An excellent student herself and a consistent top scorer, Mrs. Raghuraman pursued B.A (Hons.) in Economics and followed it up with an M.A (Research) in Educational Communication. Her passion for spreading education saw her add multiple degrees to her list of credentials - these include a D.Ed (Diploma) in Education, DECE (Diploma) in Early Childhood & Education and CIG in Guidance and Counseling. Currently, she is pursuing a Doctorate in Education from the University of Pune and a Post Graduate Diploma in School Leadership & Management (PGDSLM) from Ahmedabad Management Association.
An active educationist, Mrs. Raghuraman's list of accolades, awards and achievements is endless. To name a few, she was honoured with the 'Adarsh Shikshak Puraskar' (Best Teacher Award) by the Pune Municipal Corporation in1997, Mrs. Bhavani was interviewed and filmed by Balchitrawani for 'Swachha Shala Sundar Shala', a short film telecasted by Bombay Doordarshan. She was also felicitated by the Bharatiya Janata Party Yuva Morcha in 2002 for excellent Std X results. Further, in 2003, Uttar Bharatiya Sangh felicitated Mrs. Raghuraman for Prolonged and Dedicated Services in Education, Pune. For the years 2003-04 and 2004-05, she was conferred with the 'Proficient Principal'' and 'Proficient Teacher' awards respectively at the Pune District level by Sanket Kala Academy, Pune. In 2008, she was nominated for the 'Shiksha Bharati Award' for Outstanding Contribution & Service in Education by Indian Economic Development & Research Association, New Delhi.
With a deeply held belief in the power of science, Mrs. Raghuraman has always advocated continuous progress of scientific research and development. In keeping with her philosophy, she was the coordinator of the "Children Science Movement", a face-to-face programme initiated by the late Dr. V.G. Bhide (former Vice Chancellor, University of Pune) which saw major participation from Pune city students. Additionally, she was also a key member of 'Sadachar Bharati', a national organization involved in the promotion and propagation of Indian values and culture. She was also invited by public schools in America to share teaching techniques and her experience in managing schools, curricula and other school activities.
When it comes to educating the physically handicapped and the monetarily disadvantaged, Mrs. Raghuraman has never taken a back seat. She participated in the Poona Blind Men Association programme, dedicated to the welfare of the blind. She also organized a project wherein her school students visited schools in tribal areas and presented the children with various educational aids.
She brings to Cygnus her rich experience, sensitivity and progressive teaching methodologies to facilitate pro-active learning and transfer the torch to our future global citizens.
