Assessment Methodology - Cygnus World School

We understand that in a result-oriented world, it is very natural for any student to focus more upon the areas on which they are going to get assessed but it shouldn't be done at the cost of comprehension. In fact, the traditional Blackboard-and-Chalk System encourages this approach which, sadly, develops inside the children, a very wrong picture of the concept of learning.
This study-once-in-a-blue-moon attitude that children develop towards their academic study automatically drives them to start detesting it. Once it's time for assessment, survival
instinct coupled with a lack of sufficient time beckons them to focus all of their energies onto what's important for the exam.
This further encourages most to meander into rote-learning, which is even more detrimental for their progress. This soon becomes a way of life and is unfortunately preserved by most children for the rest of their lives, only to get reflected in every one of their endeavours.
This is the biggest setback that any educational framework can face and the right steps need to be taken to intercept such a mentality from creeping into the children's psyche.
At Cygnus, we have taken into consideration the following three important points to keep the child at bay from such a damaging approach.
Assessment point 1. Assessment must be a continuous, comprehensive and constructive process instead of being conducted only once or twice a year.
True academic assessment can never be gauged only in the form of a written exam. It needs to take into account everything ranging from basic comprehension of the subject matter to the ultimate and effective application of the acquired knowledge. For instance, in a language class, an 'A' grade is no good if the child is unable to apply his learning in the real world. Reading skills, oral communication skills etc hence must also contribute to the final grade.

For an all-round development, besides academic achievement, the student's social, emotional and physical intelligence levels need to be improved upon as well. This makes sports and co-curricular activities extremely vital wherein the student's dexterity at multiple levels can be developed.
It is important for both the children and the parents to realize that assessment is a very vital tool for any individual and one must learn how to filter assessment results constructively to qualitatively and intellectually improve both their art and craft of the subject in question.
Assessment point 4.
An important milestone in a student's journey is good performance in the external Board and various entrance examinations to get admission into institutions of higher learning of his/her choice.
Therefore, our holistic assessment approach ensures that students give the requisite attention to this aspect from early on and are groomed to cope with this pressure and maximize performance.
